Do station staff general request anyone smoking to put it out, or do they just turn a blind eye?

Smoking is illegal on trains and anywhere on the stations.
At staffed stations be prepared to be asked to put your cigarette out and risk a fine if you don’t.

It is strictly enforced, staff ignoring someone smoking on the patform are liable to a big fine.

Generally the smoking ban is well enforced at staffed stations. However, there are many rural stations in Britain which are unstaffed, or only staffed for a few hours a day. where obviously enforcement is not possible.
