I notice in a lot of historical movies, people don’t really smoke. Did smoking start in America?

Huron Indian myth has it that in ancient times, when the land was barren and the people were starving, the Great Spirit sent forth a woman to save humanity. As she traveled over the world, everywhere her right hand touched the soil, there grew potatoes. And everywhere her left hand touched the soil, there grew corn.

The ancient Mayans (about 700B.C. to 1200A.D.) Knew and recorded the use of tobacco.

The smoking of tobacco is believed to have began during the times of Native Americans. Christopher Columbus first discovered tobacco and how to smoke it about October 12, 1492. The man that America was named after, Amerigo Vespucci, discovered chewing tobacco. It wasn’t until the time of the Nazis’ that anyone knew that tobacco was cancerous. So to answer your question, smoking tobacco is thought to have started with the native americans for there are no records before that. But logically it would make the most sence if it was started by tribes before civilazation.

Europe and the rest of the world didn’t smoke or use tobacco because they didn’t have it until the Americas were discovered. The plant is native to the Americas.

It is impossible to know when Native Americans started smoking tobacco.
