Christopher Columbus first discovered tobacco and how to smoke it about October 12, 1492. The man that America was named after, Amerigo Vespucci, discovered chewing tobacco. It wasn't until the time of the Nazis' that anyone knew that tobacco was cancerous. So to answer your question, smoking tobacco is thought to have started with the native americans for there are no records before that.
